Welsh farmers to hear from General Election candidates
THE general election campaign gets underway in Wales on April 16 with an NFU Cymru-arranged on-farm forum involving representatives of the main political parties.
They will be told by union president, Ed Bailey, that any incoming government must put productive agriculture at the centre of its political agenda.
“While the majority of farming issues are now determined by devolved Government there are still some important aspects which remain with Westminster,” he says.
“With a general election pending and the possibility that we could be facing a very different political landscape, this is our opportunity to set out the actions we would like an incoming Westminster Government to take to allow the industry to respond and change and continue to provide solutions for the nation.”
Prospective candidates will be told that if they are elected they must help the farming industry fulfil its potential in meeting the major future challenges, including food security and climate change.
The forum and launch of the union’s general election manifesto will take place on the Ceredigion dairy farm of John and Mair Davies, at Silian, near Lampeter.
