Welsh Assembly counts costs of badger trial

THE legal cost of the Welsh Assembly Government’s fight to challenges to its planned West Wales badger cull totalled more than £57,000.

A BBC Wales Freedom of Information request has discovered that the £57,446.65 bill includes £20,000 paid towards the Badger Trust’s costs.

The trust last month won its court fight to halt a cull in north Pembrokeshire and parts of Ceredigion and Carmarthenshire after Court of Appeal judges said the plan should have only referred to the proposed cull area, not the whole of Wales.

The appeal court made its decision after the Badger Trust appealed against the cull, questioning its effectiveness.

Lord Justice Pill said the Assembly Government was wrong to make an order for the whole of Wales when it consulted on the basis of an Intensive Action Pilot Area.

  • It is not the mistake in making the order for the whole of Wales - the sole ground mentioed here.

It was that there was not shown to be a "substantial" reduction in bTB that is the one that seriously stopped the cull.

The area can be changed; the lack of a "substantial" reduction can't.

  • How on earth is Elin Jones allowed to remain in her position???

Any decent minister with an ounce of morailty (a rare thing nowadays) would have resigned when it became public the antics she was up to. The cull was illegal from the start - as announced by the appeal judges! Has Elin Jones and WAG apologised for their awful conduct - no - all they announced on losing the appeal was that they were disappointed with the result! Governments don't come much more arrogant (and dangerous) than that!

It is Elin Jones and her brown-nosing cronies at WAG who should personally foot the bill for their folly, not the taxpayer.

Vote to give WAG more power in the forthcoming referendum - you must be joking! They are continually proving that they are unfit to govern a nation, and are not tbe trusted with power.

  • This is only the cost of the court case! millions more has been wasted in paying contractors and ordering equipment.
Whilst social services are cut and OAP's freeze this winter Elin will be warm and cosy, very well paid for wasting our money!
