Versace inspired clothes keep Welsh cows happy
A WELSH farmer has designed a range of clothes and accessories including sun visors, rain jackets and wool legwarmers for his fashion conscious cows.
Farmer John McMercer first came up with the idea when he observed his cows during a particularly heavy rain storm. They are now the best dressed cows in the valleys.
“They were all looking very sad in the rain so I thought I would try and design a rain jacket,” he said.
John’s wife is a seamstress and together they made a full body waterproof jacket and hat to stave off the rain.
“It was nothing too complicated a simple design on red material.
“Now when it rains the cattle are so happy their milk yield is increasing. The success got me thinking about other ideas.”
Mr McMercer has since designed a visor to shade his cows’ eyes on sunny days, woollen leg warmers for extra warmth on frosty mornings and slippers to protect his cows’ feet before they bed down in the evenings.
He said his inspiration for the clothes comes from his heroes in the fashion world including Stella McCartney, Versace and Autograph by Marks & Spencer.
“People say my cows look stupid but I dont really mind because I have the happiest cows in the world,” said Mr McMercer who has now set up a company called Fashion Cows.
But the animal welfare lobby warned the cattle may be too happy.
“We are very worried that if Fashion Cows is successful that all cows will be happy and we will have to find something else to lobby on,” said animal welfare campaigner Ivor Furcoat.
Uninhibited, Mr McMercer is now looking to Japan to find other ways to improve the happiness of his cows.
“We like the wagyu beef idea and I have started to give our cows a pint of Welsh ale while I massage them in the evenings. Its hard work but I love cows so I dont mind,” he said.

By unlocking the export potential China offers the pig industry, not to mention the red meat sector as a whole, we could gain entry into a marketplace which comprises a fifth of the world’s population.
