Union slams 'disgraceful' Quango cuts
THE Government’s plan to axe 180 arms-length bodies - including 50 within Defra’s remit - has been slammed by the Public and Commercial Services Union (PCS).
News broke last week Defra was to cut some 50 bodies including the Farm Animal Welfare Council, the Spongiform Encephalopathy Advisory Committee, Veterinary Residues Committee and Food From Britain.
The cuts come as part of the Government’s drive to cut the national deficit and the full details of the spending cuts will be unveiled in a Comprehensive Spending Review on October 20.
Most Departments, including Defra, face cuts of in the region of 30 to 40 per cent. It emerged on Thursday that Defra is one of five Departments to have already agreed its cuts.
The PCS warned the Government against the proposals, accusing it of ‘playing politics with people’s lives’.
PCS general secretary Mark Serwotka said: “This is a disgraceful way to treat staff who work hard and are committed to providing quality services, very often on low pay.
“It appears the Tories are looking to grab the headlines in a week where their cuts have been criticised by members of their own coalition, and they seem happy to play politics with people’s lives.
“We do not accept the need for cuts to public spending. Our alternative, of investment in public services and proper resources to tackle tax dodging, would help the economy to grow.”
