Scots hand out £60 million of RDP funds
TWO grants of more than £1 million have been awarded to businesses as part of a £60m hand-out of Scottish Rural Development Programme funds.
The top grant, announced by Cabinet Secretary for Rural Affairs Richard Lochhead, was £1.646m going to former Grampian Country Food founder Fred Duncan to convert some large pig units into an enriched colony system for 225,000 laying hens at Fortrie, Aberdeenshire.
A dairy farm in the Nairn area will receive £1.092m to almost double its cow numbers from 700 to 1,200 and install a state-of-the-art milking parlour.
The country’s largest egg producer, Glenrath Farms, Peebles, will receive £745,000 to upgrade two chicken sheds into the enriched colony system. It will form part of a multi-million pound overhaul in readiness for forthcoming changes to legislation.
A grant of £577,000 will go to a dairy enterprise in Balfron, Stirlingshire, while a grant of £559,847 will help towards the establishment of two 16,000-bird laying units at a farm in Dumfries and Galloway and its move away from beef cattle.
