Maris Peer potatoes a month early

STOCKS of UK mainland Maris Peer potatoes will hit the shelves in Marks and Spencer stores from Monday (March 26) – a month earlier than usual.

Early Maris Peer are traditionally available from late April, but this year’s crop has made an extra early appearance.

Louisa Read, vegetable buyer at Marks and Spencer said the ‘extra early’ crop had been grown by specialist early producer Mark Rowe, making good use of carefully selected and sheltered growing areas, and Cornwall’s milder winter climate.

She added: “Consumers trust M&S to offer them the freshest produce throughout the year, and the fact our favourite new potato variety is available so early in 2012 means our customers can buy the freshest and tastiest new potatoes on the high street earlier than ever before.”
