London 2012 to get ‘best of British’
THE London Olympic committee has pledged to serve up ‘the Best of British’ food during the 2012 games.
The London Organising Committee for the Olympic Games (LOCOG) presented its ‘Food Vision’ today (Monday, December 7) and committed to procuring UK Red Tractor Assured food wherever seasonally possible.
It said all dairy products, beef, lamb and poultry must be British and traditional British cheese such as cheddar must also be produced domestically.
Fruit, vegetables, salads and cereal based products will also be farmed in Britain wherever possible.
Paul Deighton, London 2012 chief executive, said food was vital to give punters ‘a fantastic experience’.
“We want it to be affordable, sustainable and celebrating the fantastic diversity and quality of what Britain has to offer,” he said.
A total of 14 million meals will be served during the Olympic and Paralympic Games, across 40 locations.
Peter Kendall, NFU president, welcomed the opportunity to showcase British produce.
“Committing to procure UK Red Tractor assured food wherever seasonally possible delivers on LOCOG’s promise to provide fresh, quality food for all at the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2012.
“It is often described as ‘the largest peace-time catering operation in the world’. Never before has such a large scale catering contract had such sustainable procurement standards and I hope that this can act as a blueprint for minimum sustainable catering standards in the future,” he said.

They'll be lucky! With over 50 dairy farmers leaving the industry last month there may not be enough domestic milk to keep the visitors in ice cream!

It doesn't say all meat has to be British and red tractor. It says the percentages still have to be worked out. There's no way McDonalds won't use Irish as part of their mince mixture. This report is a typical piece of over-eyes wool-pulling.
