Kendall vows to fight supermarket abuse

NFU president Peter Kendall will lead his European counterparts in the fight against supermarket abuse after his election to an important EU food chain body last week.

Mr Kendall has been elected chairman of the European farmers’ association (COPA) food chain working group where he has pledged to help eradicate bully-boy tactics in the supply chain.

He said he would work closely with the European Commission to develop a market that worked for farmers and consumers across the EU.

“The abuse of market power is a problem for farmers across Europe.

“Our European election manifesto was clear that we should have a framework to eradicate bully-boy tactics across the single market.

“If we are calling for a strong Common Agriculture Policy to safeguard future food production we also need to see a fair and transparent EU marketplace in which farming businesses can thrive,” he said after his election.

Mr Kendall, who is also vice-president of COPA, was back in Brussels this week to talk about biodiversity.

Despite missing 2020 targets to reduce biodiversity loss, he told EU delegates at an environmental conference in Brussels to trust farmers to look after the environment.

“European farmers and growers are wholly committed to protecting the countryside and habitats while remaining profitable and productive,” said Mr Kendall.

He urged the Commission to work with farmers, scientists and NGOs to deliver sensible and achievable biodiversity goals.
