It's Moo Tube! London Underground invaded by cows
HERD the one about the cow on the Tube? No, neither had we until this morning’s ‘coMOOte’ to work saw hundreds of charity activists, dressed as cows, descend on the Underground in a bid to raise awareness of rainforest-free food.
The demonstration, organised by Friends of the Earth, aimed to highlight the hidden chain linking meat and dairy from British farms to wildlife and rainforest destruction in South America.
The campaign called on commuters to join the ‘MOOvement’ and call for new laws to prevent British farmers feeding their stock on imported soy.
The coMOOte takes place on the same day as Environment Secretary Caroline Spelman delivers a keynote speech at a farming and food conference organised by the Smith Institute.
Friends of the Earth’s senior food campaigner, Vicki Hird, said: “When it comes to food and farming, Ministers are ignoring the meatiest issue of all - the massive environmental hoofprint of our factory farms.
“The Government is propping up a system that links the meat and dairy on our plates to wildlife and rainforest destruction in South America.
“We don’t need planet-wrecking factory farms to feed a growing population - and we don’t all need to go veggie either.
“Ministers must back our new law to help farmers to feed animals a home-grown diet, and people to eat less and better meat.”

As one Defra agency appears to be finally learning the painful lessons of IT rollouts gone wrong, another seems to have walked into the same trap.

Thrilled to see pictures of the FOE initiative to alert commuters/consumers to what's going on - the connection between feeding so-called food animals on food like imported soya, a protein crop that could feed humans directly.Precious forest land. is being routinely destroyed to grow feed for animals that suffer horribly in intensive systems. Thank you FOE!!!
