Ex-schools chief is next RASE president
THE next president of the Royal Agricultural Society of England is to be Sir Mike Tomlinson, a former chief inspector of schools.
Sir Mike, who will succeed the current president George Weston in October this year, was a science teacher for 12 years before joining the Inspectorate of Schools (now Ofsted) in 1978.
In November 2000 he became Chief Inspector of Schools, a post which he held until his retirement in 2002. On retirement, he led an inquiry into the controversy surrounding A-level grading, and more recently was chief adviser for London schools.
RASE council chairman Henry Cator, who described it as a ‘terrific development’ for RASE, said: “Educating schoolchildren about farming and attracting new entrants to the industry are key focus areas for the society.
“Sir Mike brings with him vast knowledge and experience in the education sector and we are delighted to be working with him.”
