Dairy farmers head to Westminster
DAIRY farmers met with MP’s at Westminster yesterday (Tuesday, June 22) to talk to them about the issues facing the industry and to try and get a better deal for their milk.
The NFU organised farmers and MPs from Yorkshire and the North East to travel to the House of Commons to talk to Ministers about the ‘binding’ contracts farmers are often tied into for up to 18 months with a ‘complete lack of control’ over the price they receive for their milk.
NFU chief dairy adviser Rob Newbery said: “We have invited 10 dairy farmers from Yorkshire and the North West to represent the 10 dairy farmers coming out of the industry each week.
“We know the supply chain is not working the in UK and our producers are going out of business. We now have approximately 10,000 from 28,000 in the 1990s. We need to do something to address this.
“We wanted these farmers and MPs from the north to come down to London and express the concerns of dairy farmers right across the UK. This all helps to press Defra and press for action for a better deal.”
