Farm debate sees budget reform plan ‘thrown in the bin’
The EU’s top agricultural chief, Mariann Fischer Boel, has distanced herself from controversial plans to overhaul the bloc’s budget.
The commissioner was speaking at a debate in the European Parliament on the future of the bloc’s Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) on Tuesday (10 November), with MEPs voicing strong criticism of budget proposals circulated in the media last month.

Today the European Court of Auditors published their annual report on the EU’s budget — and in what is near becoming a European tradition, they have refused to sign off on the accounts.
This makes 15 years in a row the EU’s own accountants have reckoned there was too many holes in the books to allow them to sign and clear the the accounts.

Windfarm advert was ‘misleading’
Wind farm developers in Shetland have been told to scrap an advert with misleading financial and environmental statements.
The Advertising Standards Authority has upheld four complaints against the leaflet, which was published in May.

EIB in £1.4bn loan deal for wind farms
Small independent wind farm developers are expected to be the big winners from renewable energy financing of up to £1.4bn ($2.3bn) agreed by the European Investment Bank on Tuesday.
Smaller developers have felt the squeeze in the downturn, as credit lines and project financing dried up rapidly last year and have not returned. The new money, in the form of loans, will be directed towards wind farms expected to cost between £20m and £100m to construct.

‘Recession will not damage our farmers’
The recession will not damage farmers in the region, the new local chairman of the National Farmers’ Union (NFU) has said.
Alex Godfrey, who was elected as the new chairman of the North Lincolnshire branch of the union at the annual meeting on Monday night, is an arable and pig farmer.

Working farm only one in north to get award
A working farm in Inverness-shire has become the only one in the north of Scotland to gain a gold star award from VisitScotland for its accommodation.
Balliefurth Farm, between Nethybridge and Grantown, has received three Gold Stars from the tourism promotion body.

Locals scramble to object to plan for large eggs farm
A large eggs farm planned for east Caithness has attracted a clutch of objections from locals. The £1million venture earmarked for a site south of Latheronwheel would accommodate 26,000 chickens.
The planning application by a London-based firm is being re-advertised to clarify its boundaries and its access from the A9.
