D Day for future of European farm policy

LATER today, the European Parliament will make its mind up on the future of the Common Agricultural Policy but in the run up to this event, the architect of the report being considered by the politicians expressed his hope for “substantial even overwhelming support” from MEPs.

George Lyon MEP, who took his report through the EU agricultural committee last month in the run up to today’s vote, described the CAP proposals as being a good deal not just for farmers but for all 500 million people living in the EU.

Mystery as part-time farm is worker ‘trampled to death by herd of cows’

A teacher working part-time at a farm has been trampled to death by a herd of cows.

Philip Whiting, 47, was found lying unconscious in a field. Paramedics battled to save him but he died at the scene.

Last night it was unclear what caused the cows to charge at the farm in Fordham, near Ely in Cambridgeshire.

Farmer revives monks’ ale tradition

The ancient beer-making traditions of Irish monks are being revived by a resourceful farmer with a nose for a fine ale.

Gordy Follis, 36, is converting a derelict dairy on his Co Fermanagh farm into a brewery in a bid to recreate the taste enjoyed by the local monastic orders around 1,500 years ago.

Mid Wales farmer sees “UFOs shoot off towards Shrewsbury”

A MID Wales farmer says he spotted a UFO flying over Forden on Saturday night.
Philip Benbow, of Forden, was standing outside his home at 10.15pm when he noticed strange orange objects in the sky.

He said: “I saw about 20 orange lights flying in batches of between three and four.
