EXCLUSIVE: Footpath budget cuts ‘will hit rural economy’

MILLIONS of pounds could be taken out of Yorkshire’s rural economy if the maintenance of public rights of way is subjected to cuts, countryside groups have warned.

Campaign groups say they are massively concerned that October’s Comprehensive Spending Review will see already stretched rights of way teams within local authorities unable to manage the country’s footpaths and bridleways.

Weather fears push up wheat

Western European wheat markets extended gains yesterday as adverse crop weather in the southern hemisphere and harvest rain in Germany reinforced concerns about global supply in the wake of a severe drought in Russia.

Benchmark European futures in Paris broke resistance levels to hit new three-week highs, while Germany’s cash market set a 28-month peak as relentless rain continued to threaten the quality of the new crop.

Winter Grain Sowing Drags On

Prime Minister Vladimir Putin said Friday that Russia was not short of grain after the worst drought in half a century cut yields, and that there was no reason for an increase in domestic grain prices.

The country has reserves of 9.5 million metric tons of grain, including 3 million tons of feed grain, Putin told Russian news agencies while driving on the Amur highway in the Khabarovsk region. Russian companies have a carry-over of 21 million tons of grain in the country, Putin said, Interfax reported.

FIREFIGHTERS succeeded in rescuing a cow from a slurry pit in Cheltenham.

The two crews were forced to think on the hoof when the animal slipped into the pit at a farm off Cold Pool Lane, Badgeworth.

At 7.50am yesterday, farmer David Hardwick discovered the cow was stuck and out of reach. So the six-strong team of firemen had to pump out the contents of the pit to rescue the animal.
