Farm to fork traceability 'impossible' claims food safety expert
TRUE farm to fork traceability is nigh-on impossible although that is what consumers have been promised, said food safety expert Prof Patrick Wall of University College, Dublin.
Speaking at the Sentry Conference in Cambridgeshire on Wednesday (February 10), the former European Food Safety Authority chairman
described the journey from farm to fork as ‘a maze’, particularly once agro-chemicals and pharmaceuticals were considered.
Extensive global trade meant products were processed, mixed with other products and sold across the world, sometimes with different country of origin labelling, which made it very difficult to trace, he said.
He explained some processed meat producers could be using meat sourced from several different countries at any one time.
“Between two slices of bread, you can get meat from three continents. Trying to trace that is not easy,” he said.
