Welsh lamb exports global
WALES is the biggest member state exporter of sheepmeat to countries outside the European Union - and the product’s popularity is growing.
“Europe is naturally the largest single overseas market for Welsh lamb,” Dai Davies, chairman of Welsh red meat promotion agency Hybu Cig Cymru told European politicians and officials on Wednesday in Brussels.
“But what you may not realise is that Wales, as a region within the EU, is the biggest exporter of sheepmeat to countries outside the EU,” he said.
He said Welsh lamb had ‘cracked’ the Middle East market through Dubai, it had been sold in Singapore and Hong Kong for years and negotiations were continuing to allow the sale of Welsh lamb in mainland China.
“I am optimistic we will have good news on this front sooner rather than later,” said Mr Davies.
