SPRING SPRAYING
Spring spraying: Crucial questions answered
Variety consultant, Bob Simons, answers some key questions.
WHILE most agronomists agree rust control will be a key consideration this season, a number of key questions remain:
Q:Will 2010 be worse than 2009 for rust?
A: It has the potential to be so as rust was evident in crops pre-Christmas, unlike 2009 when the first sightings were in March/April.
Q:When will the T0 be needed?
A: Possibly as early as February where rust has been seen early and if it is very active. If so, this may compromise T1 timings. Ideally a T0 should be applied in mid-March, three to four weeks ahead of the T1.
Q:What effect will another cold snap like the one in January have?
A: It will help push the T0 spray back into late February or March.
Q:Are there any product availability issues?
A: There should be no issues with most key products.
