Advantage of zero cultivation
ONLY around six per cent of UK combinable crops are direct drilled, according to estimates.
Advocates of the system, however, question why this figure remains relatively low, given the potential rewards of reduced establishment costs, better timeliness, improved soil structure and increased yields.
That was the consensus among speakers at the No-Till Alliance open day, which attracted over 200 visitors and was held at direct drilling farmer and contractor Simon Chiles’ premises near Edenbridge in Kent.
The experts acknowledged, though, there was no quick route to no-till success, and it might be necessary to make short-term sacrifices to achieve longer-term results.
