SPRING SPRAYING

Spring spraying: Responding to epidemic

WOULD you be able to get around your wheat acreage quickly enough with the sprayer in the event of a rust epidemic?

Advice from the experts is the ‘vulnerable area’ should not exceed one day’s spraying. But with sprayer capacity on larger farms typically 150-250 hectares (370-620 acres) per sprayer per day – two to three days is perhaps a more realistic figure.

And with 50 per cent of the UK wheat acreage at risk from rust infections, the one day target has almost certainly been exceeded this season.

Advice when applying fungicides against rust is where possible to prioritise varieties rated 2, ahead of those rated 4 and those rated 4 ahead of 6 (although this may be difficult to achieve in practice).
