Hedgerow Management Workshop

10 February 2012

Friday, February 10, 10:00 a.m. to 01:30 p.m. Are you a Farmer, land manager or contractor, looking for advice on your hedgerows? Expert advice coming soon to a farm near you! RSPB, E&SW, EWT and NE will be delivering a Hedgerow Management workshop for farmers throughout Essex. Topics covered include how to safeguard your Single Farm Payment and agri-environment scheme payments with regard to field boundaries. In addition hedge management and restoration including hedge coppicing and laying will be discussed. Goal: Assess the impact of different forms of management on hedgerow biodiversity, e.g. closely cut, cut into an A shape or square topped, laid or coppiced. The impact on wildlife value of non-management (i.e. development into relict hedges) also needs to be taken into account as does the timing of any management activities. How? At a local farm we will look at different hedgerow management techniques and the management prescription for environmental stewardship scheme and single farm payment compliance. This is an informal walk so any questions that arise during the event will be answered. Who? This workshop is recommended for anyone in stewardship, those thinking of applying or wishing to target specific species in their farm, but also for those who would like to learn more. Book now your place!! Lunch and Refreshment provided. BASIS points available. Nigel Adams Vice-chairman of the National Hedgelaying Society & Frank Vargas Essex Farmland Bird Recovery Officer Frank shall be attending.
