GM contamination confirmed at Somerset site

OILSEED rape at a trial site in Somerset has been contaminated by GM seed, Defra has confirmed following an investigation by its GM Inspectorate.

The GM seed, which is not approved for cultivation in Europe, was discovered following a tracing exercise after a similar contamination in Scotland earlier this year.

Defra said no GM material had entered the food chain, and it was now being ‘securely stored’ while investigations continue.

None of the seed was transported to other destinations and the investigation has confirmed no other oilseed rape crops were grown in the vicinity at the time of the trial.
