Follow the General Election with Farmers Guardian
IT’S calm before the storm. The day of the poll itself always has a slightly unreal feel to it - sandwiched between the frenzy of the campaign and the drama of the exit poll and the first results as they start to roll in.
But this uneasy calm cannot disguise for one moment the significance of the day.
The reason Election 2010 is so special is that, even on the afternoon of polling day, nobody can predict with any certainty who will be entering 10 Downing Street on May 7.
A hung parliament remains a highly possible outcome. The latest polls suggest the Conservatives have maintained a lead over the other two main parties of seven to eight points.
If the polls are accurate – a big if – this would suggest the Tories will get the most seats in Parliament, but probably not enough to secure an overall majority. It is still all to play for.
The true picture will only emerge once the polls close at 10pm and political careers are made and ruined as the all-important results come in throughout the night.
Farmers Guardian will be following events closely, reporting on the key moments as they happen and analysing their significance for farming. We will be:
- Running a live feed with input from our journalists, the NFU and, of course, you.
- Posting regular updates on Twitter under the #farmelection hashtag
- Keeping a special eye one the key rural constituencies that could help determine of the overall outcome of the election.
- Monitoring the fate of the big names connected to farming, past and present, some of whose seats are under serious threat.
- Seeking expert opinion as events unfold.
Whether you are for Brown, Cameron or Clegg - or neither of them – a HUGE night lies ahead. Make sure you stick with us throughout the night for a uniquely agricultural take on the General Election.

By unlocking the export potential China offers the pig industry, not to mention the red meat sector as a whole, we could gain entry into a marketplace which comprises a fifth of the world’s population.
