Dorset County Show
Torrential rain turned the Showground into a mudbath, but top class cattle and sheep line-ups, and the Charollais Sheep Society’s Champion of Champions 2008 competition, took minds off the inclement weather.
THE Dorset County show was a winner for Charollais breeders Mr and Mrs A.G. Selway, of Stourbridge, Dorset, as they picked up the inter-breed title before going on to win the Charollais Sheep Society’s champion of champions award.
Charollais breeders from around the country brought their sheep – each one a champion from this year’s show circuit – to compete for the title but it was the Selways who won on their first outing this season.

Shocked
“We were absolutely shocked and surprised,” said Mrs Selway. “We haven’t been to any shows this year but we decided to support our local show as we always have.
“When we won the inter-breed we then qualified for the champion of champions and we didn’t think we had a chance against these breeders from all around the country who have been showing all year, but we gave it a go and won.
“We didn’t enter the other shows this year as we normally would because we were in a protection zone for bluetongue and we didn’t know what would happen with movement restrictions, but we thought we would come to Dorset and so it has been fantastic really.”
The Charollais took the Dorset inter-breed title, beating competition from the rare breeds champion, a Greyface Dartmoor exhibited by Mrs S. James.
The Selways, whose 1,000 strong flock includes 90 pedigree Charollais, also claimed the the pairs championship.

By unlocking the export potential China offers the pig industry, not to mention the red meat sector as a whole, we could gain entry into a marketplace which comprises a fifth of the world’s population.
