Defra confirms second cull

DEFRA has confirmed that animals on a neighbouring farm are also being slaughtered as a precautionary measure, following the confirmation of a new foot-and-mouth case on land near Milton Park Farm, Egham in Surrey, earlier today (Wednesday).

It is thought there are around 40 cattle involved in this second cull and several hundred pigs.

A temporary control zone has been established at an as yet unidentified location in Norfolk while a suspected case there is investigated. A Defra spokesperson said the earliest the case could be confirmed or cleared would be Thursday morning.

Limited movements of animals susceptible to foot-and-mouth will be allowed under strict biosecurity arrangements to address immediate welfare issues, in line with the contingency plan.

The Standing Committee in Brussels adopted emergency measures on Wednesday extending the categorisation of Great Britain as a high risk area until October 15 at the earliest.

This will be be signed on Thursday morning, and effectively means a ban on exports from GB to other EU member states.
