Cold could hit wheat bulb fly eggs

THE recent cold spell may have delayed wheat bulb fly egg hatch, ADAS is advising.

Wheat bulb fly eggs usually start to hatch some time during January and February but the start of hatch is dependent upon accumulated temperature.

Overall egg numbers are low this year but late sown crops could still be at risk if they are at pre-tillering growth stages when eggs start to hatch.

Some earlier sown crops could also be at risk if growth has been slow.
