Benn confirms set-aside plans at NFU Conference
Defra Secretary Hilary Benn has confirmed that he is considering a voluntary approach to preserving the environmental benefits of set-aside.
Speaking at the NFU Conference in Birmingham, Mr Benn said he would consider this alongside an approach based on forcing farmers to manage land for environmental purposes through cross-compliance.

The voluntary approach is likely to take the form of encouraging more arable farmers to take part in entry level stewardship.
He insisted that if the voluntary approach was adopted it would not be an easy option for farmers and it would have to come in next year.
A consultation on a post set-aside environment policy is due out soon.
