Ayrshire breed in clover with inter-breed win

INTER-BREED dairy honours went to the Ayrshire, Sandyford Clover 10, a home-bred daughter of KC Roses Chatter Red from Blaze Tomlinson.

This third calver from Mr Tomlinson’s 200-strong herd based at Nanpantan, Leicestershire, was shown eight weeks calved, giving 42kg with butterfat at 5 per cent and protein at 3.5 per cent.

The title winner was inter-breed heifer champion at the Dairy Event two years ago and in the same year was breed winner and inter-breed heifer at the Great Yorkshire.

She was also breed champion at last year’s Royal. Mr Tomlinson hopes to take her to this year’s Dairy Event.

Inter-breed judge, Meurig James of Carmarthenshire, said his champion ‘oozed style and dairyness’. “She has a superb, hard top. She walks on good a good set of hind legs and feet and has a mammary system that you can only dream of.”

The Jersey champion, Pavenham Iben 9, was tapped out in reserve. Another third calver, Iben 9, is from Milly Shipley’s Pavenham herd at Boston, Lincolnshire.

This Curtsey Duncan Jude daughter is classified EX92 and this year has won the breed championship at the East of England and exhibitor-bred championship at Lincolnshire.

The cow’s daughter, Pavenham Iben 12, a heifer in-milk, took the reserve rosette in the Jersey breed judging and also the inter-breed heifer championship.

Third in the inter-breed line-up was the Holstein champion, Goostrey Coll 225, from the partnership of Ian Williamson and Cameron Baty, Stocksfield, Northumberland.

The fifth calver, sired by Kemview Vanetas Vision, is classified EX93. She took the overall championship at last year’s Western Holstein Club show and also won the production inspection class at last year’s Cheshire. She is giving 52kg and in her fourth lactation gave 14,036kg in 305 days at 3.21 per cent fat and 3.05 per cent protein.

The dairy line-up was completed by the Dairy Shorthorn winner, Churchroyd Heather 24, from I.R.G. Collins and Partners of Dewsbury, Yorkshire. The reserve, Churchroyd Peggy 6, was also from the Collins family.
