AHDB confirms levy increase for pig producers
THE Agriculture & Horticulture Development Board (AHDB) has confirmed farmers' levy rates for 2009/10 after they were given the green light by Government Ministers.
Pig producers will be faced with an increased levy for the coming year while farmers from all other sectors will see no change to the levy they currently pay.
The decision to raise pig levies by 10p per head was taken after it was reduced last year in response to the poor profitability of the sector.
In a statement AHDB said: “The former producer levy rate of 85 pence per head is being reinstated following a 10 pence per head reduction applied during the 2008/09 year in recognition of the problems that the sector was facing at the time.
“The market is now stabilising and therefore it has been decided, following industry consultation, to reinstate the full levy to deliver the BPEX proposed programme of activity for the English pig sector.”
The new levy rate will come into force from April and will remain in place until March 2010 when levies across all sectors will be reviewed.

By unlocking the export potential China offers the pig industry, not to mention the red meat sector as a whole, we could gain entry into a marketplace which comprises a fifth of the world’s population.
