As Britain’s sole remaining volume ploughmaker, Dowdeswell Engineering is upholding a tradition dating back some 200 years to when Robert Ransome of Ipswich first patented the chilled cast iron plough share.
Cast iron was an ideal material for the purpose because it allowed identical components to be produced from moulds, leading to mass production of plough shares and, within a few years, of the entire plough itself.
Being bolted together, the plough created by Robert Ransome brought about a revolution not just in the manufacture of the implement but in the replacement of worn, broken and bent parts, which became faster, easier and more economical.
Although manufacture of Ransomes’ ploughs ceased in the 1980s, Dowdeswell Engineering had the foresight to acquire the patterns, trade marks and manufacturing rights for three well-known and classic mouldboards which had been used previously on Ransomes’ ploughs and also across the entire Dowdeswell range.
Known as the UCN, SCN and YCN, these mouldboards continue in production to this day alongside the new DD, DDS and slatted mouldboard designs developed and introduced by Dowdeswell over the past 20 years.
The business was founded in 1970 by Warwickshire farmer, Roger Dowdeswell, following his development of a unique linkage which enabled a conventional plough to be mounted on and used behind a crawler tractor for the very first time.
Produced initially for use on Roger’s heavy-clay land, the success of the linkage led to the building by Roger of a fully-mounted reversible plough for crawler tractors. The DP1 (Dowdeswell Plough Number One) was born.
Shown at that year’s Royal Show, the plough won an innovation award and the subsequent publicity produced many enquiries and orders from dealers and from other crawler tractor users throughout the country, in particular Lincolnshire, South Yorkshire and heavy land areas of East Anglia and the east Midlands.
Dowdeswell plough design and production accelerated during the 1970s and 1980s, with new models being added continuously to the range to provide an extensive line-up of both conventional and reversible ploughs for use on-the-land and in-the-furrow behind wheeled and crawler tractors.
Today, the Dowdeswell plough range has been rationalised to meet the specific demands and requirements of farmers and contractors looking to purchase what is still agriculture’s primary cultivations’ implement.
